B&C Blog: 5-20 It Happens

Bobby Dwyer

Craigie boy was in a great mood this morning and it had nothing to do with the Mets or the Yankees...Nope the Carton Angels avenged an early season loss and Sonny went 3-4.  The Carton Angels are the Little League team Craig coaches and Sonny of course is Craig's son.  The Mets on the other hand didn't provide many reasons to smile as on the third pitch of the game Daniel Murphy booted a fly ball and the not so Amazins' lost 5-3 to the Dodgers, their 3rd straight loss.  The Yankees meanwhile have reeled off 7 straight, defeating the Orioles 9-1 at the Stadium....Plus, Ryan Church takes a lesson from a talking horse, Boomer gives a nickname, the Knicks lose the Draft Lottery, Michael Vick is a free man, our last housewife Kristin comes up big, John Flaherty on the Yanks, Jerry Manuel has a few words about Daniel Murphy then John Sterling offers some keen insight and Jerry Recco relives a Moment quite frankly not worth reliving...

Craig chalked yesterday's Mets game to a 'ho hum loss', explaining that you're not gonna win every game and at least they didn't beat themselves last night.  I think his positive outlook stems from the Carton family success on the baseball diamond, as the team Craig coaches and his son Sonny (3-4) plays for the Carton Angels, won a big game last night and Papa Carton could not have been prouder.  Speaking of teams playing well, the Yankees have been on a nice little roll since the return of Alex Rodriguez... Hmmm...Coincidence, I think not...As both ARod and 'You're on the Mark' Teixeira homered in CC Sabathia's 4th win of the year...

If you listened to yesterday's program, or read a paper or watched TV, you know that Ryan Church had a very costly base running blunder in LA Monday night when he failed to touch 3rd base while attempting to score the game tying run in the 11th inning.  Jerry Manuel said after the game he never remembers anyone missing 3rd base, 1st and 2nd yes, but never 3rd...So we got to wondering about Church's influences as a kid, and we discovered that he may have learned how to run the bases by watching a certain television program...

The Yankees have had a tough time keeping players healthy at the catcher position, Jorge Posada and Jose Molina are both currently on the disabled list, so lately we have seen the likes of Kevin Cash and last night's starter Francisco Cervelli behind the plate.  Boomer was quite proud of himself this morning when he told Craig the nickname he came up for Cervelli, Craig didn't seem all that impressed...

For all of you who aren't aware, the NBA (National Basketball Association) is still in existence.  In fact this is the best time of year for an NBA fan, its playoff time.  For the sake of keeping everyone interested, last night the league held its annual Draft Lottery for all of the teams that did not qualify for the postseason.  The Draft Lottery is exactly what it sounds like; all of the teams that didn't make the play-offs are put into a lottery with hopes of getting the 1st pick in next year's draft.  The reason I tell you all of this is the Knicks were one of the teams vying for the coveted 1st pick, which in all likelihood will be Oklahoma's Blake Griffin.  Well the LA Clippers won and the Knicks will pick 8th, Boomer and Craig discuss the future and the past of the Knickerbockers...

Former NFL quarterback Michael Vick was released from prison today, following a 19 month stint for running a dog fighting ring.  Now the question about his NFL future becomes front and center.  Craig feels that although Vick committed a heinous crime, he has paid his debt to society and deserves another shot to play in the league.  Boomer was not so quick to reinstate the left handed signal caller, Vick will have to be reinstated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell before he can suit up again, telling Craig it's not a right to play in the NFL, it's a privilege...

Today marked our final edition of the wildly popular trivia/game show, 'Do You Know More Sports Than a Housewife', as we are changing it up a bit starting next week.  We will now be looking for any woman who thinks they know sports to come in studio and have their knowledge put to the test.  If you think you have what it takes, go to the Boomer and Carton homepage and sign up.  Anyway, today we had our lovely housewife Kristen from New Jersey and she was pitted (not in a dog fighting kind of way) against Ed from Fairfield.  A pretty good showing (not in a dog show kind of way) for both Kristen and Ed, but Ed lost and know has to face his friends after losing to a woman...

With the Yankees playing so well, Al Dukes thought this would be a good time to have someone on who is close to the team to offer a little insight.  He needed to look no further that YES Network's John Flaherty.  John was a catcher in the Big Leagues for 15 years and ya' don't catch for 15 years unless you know a little something.  He talked with the boys about the return of ARod, Mark Teixeira's hot bat among other things surrounding the Bronx Bombers...

Jerry does a great job as a sports anchor on the program each and every time he steps into the studio and turns on his microphone.  Today was no different, as he delivered update after update filled with very informative material.  Every once in a while though, Jerry puts it all together and delivers a gem, which was the case at 930 this morning, when he delivered a great cut of Mets manager Jerry Manuel talking about Daniel Murphy, then it was on to Yankees radio play by play man John Sterling.  Should he stay or should he go John??...

Good thing Jerry had such a fantastic update at 930, because his selection for Moment of the Day left little to be desired...But if I know Jerry and I do, his family has been to my house for a barbecue, he will return tomorrow with a vengeance...
